Flying Under the Weather
Fumes from a lot of different things can find their way into the cabin--fuel, hydraulic fluids, de-icers, even pesticides. Inhaling too much of any of these can be harmful.
The air on planes is a half-and-half mixture of recirculated cabin air and air from outside. Air drawn in at cruising altitude can contain high levels of ozone, which is cleaned by ozone converters on many long-haul jets. But not all airliners have them.
Most of the time, the odd smells on a plane are just odd, unpleasant smells and nothing more. Still, there have been cases of unacceptable levels of ozone and fumes on airliners. The government may eventually set new standards for clean air on planes.
But don’t hold your breath.
