In some cases, you may have to drive a little farther to get to one, but you'll find fewer planes waiting to land and take off, shorter lines at security and smaller crowds for just about everything at many alternate airports. It's also worth checking the weather at alternate airports when flights are grounded at a major airport. Flying conditions could be better.
Depending on the airline, the location and the competition, fares can be higher or lower at smaller airports than larger ones.
